Leila de Lima: The Philippines’ Lady Justice (AB History)

Leila Magistrado de Lima, born on August 27, 1959 and was raised in Iriga City, is the secretary of Philippine Department of Justice under the Administration of President Benigno S. Aquino III.

De Lima is the eldest daughter of former COMELEC Commissioner Vicente de Lima and Norma Magistrado. She studied primary and secondary at La Consolacion Academy in Iriga City where she graduated at the top of her class in 1976, graduated with a degree in History from De La Salle University in 1980, and finished her Bachelor of Laws degree at San Beda College of Law in 1985. De Lima also finished 8th in the 1985 Bar exams. She has served as the Chairperson of the Philippine Commission on Human Rights until President Benigno Aquino III appointed her as Justice Secretary, a position she took over on July 2, 2010.
